'Aerosmith / Gems (1988) Remaster (2009)' Review!
What makes a Rock band a band and not just a singles outfit is the quality of cuts on an album. Yes, it's nice to have a few Top 40 Hits under your belt, but the meat and potatoes of any Rock band is the so-called, 'throwaway' tracks or understated, 'album filler' garnishing those elite singles. 'Gems' showcases many of those great tunes from one of Rock's enduring elitists, 'Aerosmith'. Albums like 'Toys In The Attic' with Hits like 'Sweet Emotion' & 'Walk This Way' wouldn't be quite the solid collections that they are without songs like 'Adam's Apple', 'Round & Round', and on this Remaster, 'No More, No More' to beef them up. Can YOU even imagine 'Rocks' with songs like 'Back In The Saddle' & 'Last Child' without its foundational masterpieces, 'Nobody's Fault', 'Rats In The Cellar', 'Lick & A Promise' or 'Sick As A Dog'? Yes, just like the band itself is not just its two main stars, Steven Tyler & Joe Perry, but also needs the muscle of members Joey Kramer (Is there a more solid Rock drummer?), Tom Hamilton (It must be pretty easy playing a guitar over-top some of the classiest bass-playing east of the Mississippi!), and Mr. Brad Whitford, whose axe-work can be reckoned to bolstering the twin attack led by Joe Perry a la K.K. Downing supporting Glenn Tipton in 'Judas Priest'. Collectively they might be 'Aerosmith's unsung heroes, but these songs are what makes The Smithers continue to churn out quality sounds each go round. Yes, this band are so good, YOU could nearly take any tune from any of their earlier albums and replace it here, shuffle it around, and what YOU will have in the end is still the almighty 'Aerosmith' presence, indeed, all killer - no filler! 10. Lord Of The Thighs (Get Your Wings) 1974 ***** I guess we had to learn how to 'get our wings' from someone, and hats off to Steven for sharing the joys of the cherry blossomed.
11. Jailbait (Rock In A Hard Place) 1982 ***** Every mother's nightmare, and every dad's headache, indeed!
12. Train Kept-A-Rollin' (Get Your Wings) 1974 ***** 'The Yardbirds' done quite nicely, thank YOU!
13. Make It (Aerosmith) 1973 ***** An early single with a nice riff.
14. No More, No More (Toys In The Attic) 1975 ***** Whipping those demons into shape!
15. Sick As A Dog (Rocks) 1976 ***** See the aformentioned! Tom Hamilton's ode to the comode!
16. Get It Up (Draw The Line) 1977 ***** Lost single sitting well after 'Sick..', but I would have preferred, 'I Wanna Know Why', personally.
